Kristy Chambers Interview

Depression is an incredibly common illness. Around 1 in 6 people in Australia will experience it at some point in their lives, and pharmaceutical companies have made fortunes by developing pills that alleviate the symptoms of our brains misfiring. Despite that, it’s not a topic that many people are comfortable to speak about. The fact that its invisible, that its all in your mind, can make it feel a bit like, well… that it’s all in your mind.

For Kristy Chambers, depression has been a lurking presence since she was fifteen, and when she got a bit older, travel seemed like the best form of escape – after all, it’s impossible to be unhappy on a holiday, right? Well, travel may not really have been a solution, but it’s certainly given Kristy a collection of wonderful tales to share. It’s Not You, Geography, It’s Me is the follow-up to Kristy’s best-selling debut, Get Well Soon, and in it, she talks with humour and frankness about travelling through life with an unwanted passenger.

Kristy joined Sky Kirkham in the studio to recount some of her favourite tales of travel, and to talk about her own experiences with depression. Originally broadcast 30/10/2014. It’s Not You, Geography, It’s Me is out now through UQP.
